Step 1 of 5
1
Hold & settle

Containment Hold

Still, steady pressure tells your baby's nervous system: you're safe.

  • One hand gently across your baby's chest
  • Other hand on their lower torso or hips
  • Hold completely still
  • Take five slow breaths together
  • Stay here as long as you need to
2
Release tension

Chest Open

Broad, slow strokes help regulate your baby's breathing.

  • Both hands on the centre of the chest
  • Sweep gently outward to the shoulders
  • Very light pressure, very slow
  • Repeat 3 to 5 times
  • Pause between each stroke
3
Calm the limbs

Arm Glide

Slow downward strokes encourage settling without adding stimulation.

  • Gently support one arm
  • Glide slowly from shoulder to wrist
  • Repeat 2 to 3 times per arm
  • Keep the arm close to the body
  • No lifting or stretching
4
Settle the legs

Leg Milking

Gentle downward strokes release tension your baby holds in their legs.

  • Gently support one leg
  • Wrap your hand softly around the thigh
  • Glide slowly down to the foot
  • Repeat three times, then switch
  • Stay close to the body, no stretching
5
Transition to sleep

Stillness Close

The routine ends where it began — in stillness.

  • Return to the containment hold
  • Hold still and breathe slowly
  • Lower the light a little further
  • Avoid sudden noises or movements
  • Stay as long as feels right

That's the full routine

Short sessions work best. If your baby became unsettled at any point, that's completely normal — end calmly and try again tomorrow.

Repeat this daily. Over time, your baby will begin to associate these slow, predictable movements with feeling calm.
